Plant of The Month: November
Our team are always on the look out for new developments in the gardens. Each month, our Assistant Head Gardener, Graham, will be sharing some plants of interest with us.
November 2021: Olearia paniculate
Olearia paniculate, also known as the daisy bush or akiraho, was named in honour of the 17th century German scholar Johann Gottfried Olearius, and paniculata which means small sprayed. A member of the Aster family (Asteraceae) it’s a native endemic to both north and south islands of New Zealand.
In its natural habitat it’s a large shrub or a small tree in size which prefers good drainage in full sun or partial shade making it ideal for coastal hedging. Our plant is in the Wee Garden and at 12.8m in height and 328cm in girth make it a British champion tree.
During the months of October and November, the tree comes into bloom with small flowers of little note visually but produce a sweet scent filling the area around.
