Collections Viewings

Delve into the spectacular historic records, books, art and objects in the Bute Collection at Mount Stuart with our Collections Team by booking a Collections Viewing.

Our Collections Viewings offer visitors the chance to get up-close and personal with treasures from the Bute Collection which are not on our main visitor route. Collections Viewings are charged at £25 per person, and can be used to view items from the Bute Collection such as the Bute First Folio, the Execution Account of Mary, Queen of Scots, and conditionally exempt works of art.

Please note that all conditionally exempt clocks, porcelain, and silver, as well as most of the conditionally exempt paintings are on public display on the visitor route. These can be seen when the House is open from April to October, where normal entry charge applies. Pre-book your House & Gardens tickets online here.

Items such as some paintings, furniture, and Mauchline Ware which are not on the main visitor route can be viewed during Collections Viewings. These are available to book via email on the first Wednesday of June, July, August, September, and October.

In 2025, the following dates are available to book by emailing contactus@mountstuart.com

  • Wednesday 4th June at 2pm
  • Wednesday 2nd July at 2pm
  • Wednesday 6th August at 2pm

  • Wednesday 1st October at 2pm

Collections Viewings are also available to book during any other month by prior appointment with the Collections Team. Please give at least two weeks' notice so that we can prepare for your visit to us.

About The Bute Collection at Mount Stuart

The Mount Stuart Trust cares for the Bute Collection, which is one of the UK’s foremost private historic collections, dating from the 12th century - the core of which was amassed by the Third Earl of Bute in the 18th-century.  It consists of an internationally significant archive, spectacular fine and decorative art, and extensive historic libraries collected by successive generations of the Crichton-Stuart family.

The Bute Collection's historic records, books, fine and decorative art are carefully curated within our 19th century interiors, which together, provide the foundation for the character and atmosphere of Mount Stuart.
