Farming Success on Bute: Mount Stuart featured in latest FAS TV episode
Head of Rural Operations for Mount Stuart Trust, Katie Warden, features in the latest episode of Scotland’s Farm Advisory Service (FAS) TV, which explores the opportunities and challenges facing new entrant farmers on the Isle of Bute. The episode, Farming Success on Bute: New Entrants, New Opportunities, visits two farmers who are building successful businesses with the support of the Mount Stuart Trust.
Chris and Katie Homer have established a grass-based, spring-calving dairy system at Kerrytonlia Farm, while first-generation beef farmer Andrew McMillan has recently taken on a secure pre-1991 tenancy, having gradually built his farming business on the island.
Speaking in the programme, Katie reflects on the importance of new entrants to Bute’s farming community and the wider island economy. Over the past five years, Mount Stuart has welcomed six new entrants to the island, the majority of whom are dairy farmers.
Katie also highlights what Mount Stuart looks for in new tenants, including resilience, determination and enthusiasm. Alongside high standards of animal welfare, farm presentation and a commitment to biodiversity, improving soil health and farming in conjunction with the environment.
The programme also explores the realities of farming on an island, including higher transport costs, ferry disruption and challenging weather, while highlighting the strong relationships and sense of community that help farmers overcome these challenges.
For Mount Stuart, supporting new entrants is about creating long-term, mutually beneficial relationships that help keep Bute’s farmland productive and its rural community thriving.
