Bute: UK Town of Culture 2028

Bute has been shortlisted among the final 15 towns in the running to become the UK’s first Town of Culture in 2028, with a £3 million award for the winning town.

It’s an extraordinary opportunity - not simply to create a year of cultural events, but to celebrate what makes Bute, Bute; to think big and imagine what we could create together for the future.

The organising team has made one thing clear: this is Bute’s bid, for Bute, by Bute and everyone is invited to be part of shaping it!

Over the past few weeks, Town of Culture (TOC) conversations have been taking place across the island, bringing people together to share ideas and help shape Bute’s final bid. At the heart of these conversations is a simple question: if we had one wish for Bute, what would it be?

At Mount Stuart Trust, we're right behind the TOC team and efforts - in particular our Gardens team who featured in a recent post. We’ve held our own TOC conversations, and we’re encouraging our island neighbours to do the same. It’s a chance to think about what culture means to us, what makes Bute distinctive and what we would love to see for the island’s future.

For our visitors and supporters further afield, this is also an opportunity to discover more about Bute and the ambitions of the people who call it home. You can find out more about the Town of Culture bid and how to contribute your own ideas here.
