Unravelling the Mystery: Edmonia Lewis and Bute

Mary Edmonia Lewis was the first Black and Indigenous person to achieve international recognition and acclaim for her work as a sculptor in the 19th century.

Mount Stuart holds one of only two works by Lewis in public collections in the UK, and her only work in Scotland. To celebrate the permanent display of Edmonia Lewis' Bust of Christ at Mount Stuart, we held a roundtable discussion on the life and work of Lewis, her refusal to conform and her relationship to Bute. The event was moderated by Lisa Farrington, with speakers Kirsten Pai Buick, Charmaine A. Nelson and Susannah Thompson.
