About Us

The Mount Stuart Trust

The Mount Stuart Trust is a Charitable Trust founded in 1985, which works to fulfill the vision of the late John, 6th Marquess of Bute. He believed that the public should be able to enjoy Mount Stuart and its gardens and surrounding grounds, and benefit from its collections and archives. John Bute generously endowed The Mount Stuart Trust with the Bute Estate to provide the support which enables this remarkable house and stunning gardens to be preserved and opened to visitors. The Trust owns and administers Mount Stuart and the Bute Estate.

The Bute Estate

The aims of the Trust are to conserve, preserve and maintain the house, gardens and surrounding grounds for future generations, whilst facilitating public interest, understanding and appreciation of fine and decorative art, architecture and the rural environment, and to promote access, education and research.

We hope you enjoy your visit to Mount Stuart House and Gardens.

Registered Scottish Charity number: SC009584.

Part of the Bute Family

The Bute family motto is “Avito Viret Honore” meaning “to flourish in an honourable ancestry”. The family’s longevity is proof of that motto; our creative vision is anchored in our roots but not tied to them. This unique story is testament to both our pride in our past and the desire to continually move forward.

This reflected in all of the Bute Family Companies from the innovative, modern fabrics designed by Bute Fabrics to the delicious smoked products developed by Ritchies of Rothesay from a time honoured recipe. The Bute Family Charitable Trust is dedicated to supporting charitable causes on Bute and the west coast of Scotland and Mount Stuart & Bute Estate connects people, art, land and learning.
