On occasional dates throughout the season there will be no access to the house due to special events but our Gardens, Courtyard Gift Shop and Courtyard Tea Room will be open for business as usual.

Please note the Visitor Centre Restaurant will not be open during September.

5th Marquess

5th Marquess of Bute, John Crichton-Stuart (1907-1956)

The 5th Marquess was an authority on ornithology and travelled extensively to study birds in their natural habitats. Indeed, his interest in avian life was so great that he bought the island group of St. Kilda in 1931, to protect this important breeding ground for seabirds. He bequeathed the islands to the National Trust for Scotland upon his death in 1956, and it is due to this generous act that the site is open to the public today.
