The Bute family's long history documents a dramatic rise to prominence, riddled with fortune, charity, controversy and tragedy. Their surname is traceable to the 12th century, whereupon the Anglo-Norman family became High Stewards to the Kings of Scotland. In time, Steward would become Stewart, and finally Stuart, according to the popular French spelling.
