Photography and Conservation

For reasons of conservation, photography is not allowed in the house. We ask that visitors wear sensible footwear (not high heels) to protect the floors of the house.

Group visits

Mount Stuart is happy to welcome groups. We are available for pre-booked group visits at most times of the year, subject to major works or events preventing us from accommodating your request. There is a concessionary rate for groups of 12 or more (£6.00 per person). We recommend that all groups contact us beforehand to let us know when they will be visiting. Winter tours are available by appointment, please call 01700 503877.

How to find us

We are approximately 50 minutes by road/rail from Glasgow/Glasgow Airport/Prestwick Airport to Wemyss Bay.

35 minutes ferry crossing: Weymss Bay to Rothesay.

We are 5 miles south of Rothesay town.

There is a spectacular scenic route via Argyll and Colintraive (ferry crossing to Rhubodach at north end of Bute).

All special tours are available by appointment only May through September – may be available October through April at a higher rate depending on availability.

See all rooms on view to the general public as well as a selection of private rooms i.e. the Smoking Room, Burges Chapel and Swimming Pool.

Behind the Scenes in Scotland's Most Unusual Stately Home

See behind the scenes at Scotland's most stunning and unusual stately home with a unique private tour.

The Head Tour Guide will take you on a private behind-the-scenes tour viewing rooms such as the Swimming Pool, the Burges Chapel, the Billiard Room and other treats not normally open to the general public. Your fascinating exploration of Mount Stuart will culminate in a sumptuous afternoon tea in the Private Family Drawing Room.

While you are here, take the time to explore the grounds, which contain such enchantingly named gardens as The Kitchen Garden, The Wee Garden and The Via Delorosa.

The tour costs £40 per person and will last around two to three hours.

Guided Garden Tours
June 2010 – every Friday 1pm

1-1½ hour sessions lead by Horticulturalist Graham Alcorn, taking in the sheltered haven of the Wee Garden and the splendour of the Rock Garden, where plants from the Southern Hemisphere and Asia flourish in exceptional surroundings.

£6 per person, minimum charge of £20 for groups of less than four persons, please purchase your tickets from the visitor centre.
