The story of the Visual Arts Programme

Mount Stuart is an extraordinary eclectic Victorian gothic palace, which has always been a beacon for creativity, fantasy and experimentation. Today, it continues to present a compelling and inspiring challenge to artists across the world.

The Visual Arts Programme was created in 2001 as a way to promote interest in contemporary visual arts. It embodies the Stuart family’s passion for supporting artistic talent. The programme attracts work of an international standard to Bute and Argyll and also provides diverse educational opportunities. Its objectives are to stimulate fresh perspectives and utilise the setting of Mount Stuart and the Isle of Bute as an exciting opportunity for public artwork.

Since its launch, the programme has invited artists including Kate Whiteford, Thomas Joshua Cooper, Katy Lynton, Victoria Clare Bernie, Christine Borland, Langlands & Bell, Mischa Haller, Anya Gallaccio, Nathan Coley, Moyna Flannigan and Sarah Staton to create work in response to Mount Stuart and the Isle of Bute. Commissioned works have included land art, photography, video, film, sculpture, installation and painting. These exciting projects have explored the house, its history, archives, gardens & beautiful island setting.

Each project is the result of a unique collaborative process between the artist and Mount Stuart Trust. Every one has been proved to be unique and thought-provoking. These exhibitions enhance our visitors’ experience of Mount Stuart and continue a time-honoured tradition of supporting artistic endeavour.
