FAMILY HISTORY AND GENEALOGY

The Bute Archives provide a rich source of information for family historians - particularly through the records of the various estates owned by the Bute family and its associated branches in Scotland, England and Wales.

Our extensive collection of records relating to the Bute Estate stretches as far back as November 1400, and includes a wide range of intriguing items such a landholding documents, rental ledgers, surveys, farm inventories and personal correspondence. The archives also offer valuable insight into the lives of the staff employed in the Bute household (both at Mount Stuart and elsewhere) through the ages.

Mount Stuart served as a hospital during the First World War and there are detailed records relating to this period. In recognition of her hospital work during these years, Lady Bute was made a Dame of the British Empire by King George V.
