ARCHITECTURE AND DESIGN
The Bute family have long been recognised as important patrons of architects, artists and designers. It is not surprising then, that the Bute Archives contain an internationally significant collection of architectural drawings and decorative designs.
The 3rd Earl of Bute (d.1792) commissioned the great Robert Adam to design houses for him in England, and the 3rd Marquess of Bute (d.1900) was arguably the greatest individual architectural patron Britain has ever known. The latter's works with the celebrated Gothic architect William Burges, particularly at Cardiff Castle and Castell Coch in Wales, still attract a worldwide following.
Mount Stuart itself is Britain’s finest piece of Gothic revival domestic architecture and the archive contains exhaustive notes, drawings and designs for its creation. We hold drawings for the house by Sir Robert Rowand Anderson, architect, as well as decorative designs for the lavish interiors by H W Lonsdale and others. Lord Bute sponsored a number of notable architects including Robert Weir Schultz, William Frame and John Kinross - all of whom feature in the archival collections.
