Our Library & Archives

The extensive archives at Mount Stuart date back to 1158 and provide a wealth of valuable information about the Bute family and its various branches. This important private collection offers particularly rich sources of information relating to architectural, economic, military and political history.

Our vast libraries of printed books - from the 15th Century to the present day - include some 25,000 volumes and many works from the 3rd Earl of Bute's celebrated collection developed at his Bedfordshire seat, Luton Hoo.

It is our long-term aim to open the archive for historical research and education. To achieve this end, we are currently undertaking an extensive programme of re-organisation and cataloguing. During this period, we regret that the library and archives are closed to researchers. We will update you as soon as the situation changes – thank you for your patience.

We do, though, offer a limited research service for enquirers. Please download the Enquiry Services Form (Adobe Acrobat PDF format - 51Kb) for more details and to make your request.
