The extensive archives at Mount Stuart date back to 1158 and provide a wealth of valuable information about the Bute family and its various branches. This important private collection offers particularly rich sources of information relating to architectural, economic, military and political history.
Our vast libraries of printed books - from the 15th Century to the present day - include some 25,000 volumes and many works from the 3rd Earl of Bute's celebrated collection developed at his Bedfordshire seat, Luton Hoo.
It is our long-term aim to open these fascinating collections to the public for historical research and education, so that as many people as possible can enjoy them. To achieve this end, we are currently undertaking an extensive programme of re-organisation and cataloguing. During this period, we regret that the library and archives are closed to researchers and we are unable to answer enquiries. We will update you as soon as the situation changes – thank you for your patience.
