The Purple Library

This is one of three connecting libraries in the house, each named after a different colour – Blue, Red and Purple – which were originally distinguished by wall colour.

Combined, the libraries boast a collection of almost 12,000 books! This library contains the 3rd Marquess's large and important collection of theological works. The Purple Library was one of the final rooms in the house to be completed, by Rowand Anderson in 1912 - some 32 years after work began on the house.

The beautiful stained glass windows are elaborate in detail, designed by H W Lonsdale to depict the coats of arms of the towns of Dumfries and Ayr, both of which have a connection to the Earldom of Dumfries.

Look out for …
Carved into the fireplace mirror surround sit a group of mischievous looking monkeys, puzzling over the Books of Knowledge.

During the First World War, Mount Stuart was used as a hospital and the Purple Library became an x-ray room.
