The Marble Hall
Themes for astrology and astronomy grace the stunning vaulted ceiling, which soars to a dramatic height of 80 feet. Look up and you will see 'the stars in their courses' mapped above you, as well as remarkable stained glass windows depicting the signs of the zodiac.
The Hall combines the spirit of Arthurian legend with the luxurious palaces of Greece, Rome and Byzantium and the great Cathedrals of medieval Europe. Lovingly constructed and adorned over a period of decades, the Hall achieves a majesty that stuns every visitor.
Beautifully atmospheric, the Hall is an expression of the Marquess of Bute’s interest in astronomy and astrology. At the time of construction, stories were rife as to the mystical nature of the design of Mount Stuart - Lord Rosebery, a future Prime Minister, commented in 1885: 'Rumours point to it as something beyond the Arabian nights'.
