A divine and ethereal place of worship and reflection, the Marble Chapel is perhaps the jewel in Mount Stuart's crown.
Lined with the purest white Carrara Marble, this stunning Chapel is the finest private chapel in Scotland. Commissioned by the 3rd Marquess of Bute in 1896 and only completed 102 years later in 1998, the exceptional design combines aspects of French, Spanish and Italian Gothic architecture.
The walls are dazzling white and sunlight pours in through the ruby red glass in the Clerestory, redolent of the Byzantine churches Bute had admired on his visit to Russia. The floor is in the Cosmati style popular in Medieval church buildings such as Westminster Abbey and is symbolic of the elements of earth, air, fire and water.
Look out for …
A choir of angels in the chapel lantern
St Brendan and the gigantic sea cat!
