Natural light cascades into this glorious gallery through a series of roundels, each fitted with a colour filter. The colours are different for each side of the Gallery and symbolise the four seasons.
No less than 128 female heads peer down from the stunning vaulted ceiling. Designed by H W Lonsdale, the figures are taken from ancient Greek, Roman and Norse mythology. Amongst those represented are Psyche, the lover of Cupid, Pandora, complete with box, and Brunhilde the Valkyrie – Bute being an aficionado of Wagner’s Operas.
The glowing bronze railings are exact copies of those surrounding the interior of the Palace Chapel of the Emperor Charlemagne at Aachen. Together with the clever use of mirrors, which give the impression of these corridors extending far into the distance, the Gallery achieves a heavenly ambience.
