Recently restored to its former glory, The Family Bedroom is a grand celebration of the family’s history and connections.
The bedroom belonged to the 3rd Marquess and his wife Gwendolen, later becoming the bedroom of their son, John, the 4th Marquess, after his marriage to Augusta Bellingham in 1905.
Dominating the room is a large decorative frieze, designed by H W Lonsdale depicting scenes from the life of St Margaret, the celebrated 11th Century Scottish Queen. Lord Bute claimed direct descent from St Margaret, a fact he commemorated in the heraldic theme for the stained glass windows. This frieze was painstakingly restored in 2000.
Above, the ceiling is no less ornate, emblazoned with heraldic shields representing the marriages of the Bute family from the 14th Century to the 3rd Marquess’s own marriage in 1872. Other items of interest include the unusual suite of furniture commissioned from Robert Weir Schultz, which includes an ornately carved crib complete with figures of the Four Evangelists.
