The Kitchen Garden

Mount Stuart's kitchen garden is a sensual feast of culinary and medicinal delights. It was redesigned by Rosemary Verey in 1990, following a visit by John and Jennifer Bute to her inspiring garden at Barnsley House in Gloucestershire.

A geometrical box-edged potager was laid out, as well as two new fruit cages, a cutting garden and two herb gardens - one culinary and one medicinal. New orchards containing 13 varieties of apple, three of pear and two of cherry were also planted.

The whole area is centred around an elegant glass pavilion (purchased by the 6th Marquess from the Glasgow Garden Festival in 1988), which is planted with tender plants from around the world. In 2000, in response to the changing needs of Mount Stuart, the garden was remodelled to provide more visual appeal. The beds of the cutting garden were amalgamated to form large borders planted with waves of herbaceous plants by James Alexander-Sinclair. A large part of the vegetable area was also turned over to decorative planting, although tasty seasonal vegetables are still grown for the restaurant.
